Position Summary:
Beall Applied Innovation supports and provides resources to faculty, Innovators and entrepreneurs. BAI plays a critical role in building a modern Inclusive American Dream where UCI Innovation meets industry and accelerate’ s discoveries and proved entrepreneurs what they need to succeed. Beall Applied Innovation facilitates connections between UCI and Industry. Our building, known as the COVE provides entrepreneurs access to University inventions and talent, guides large corporations to tap into the school’s research capabilities, and works with investors wanting to financially support promising new companies.
The Technology Marketing Associate will perform in-depth evaluation of technologies for patentability and licensing potential. For each technology, incumbent will identify product markets along with potential licensees, develop a targeted marketing strategy, draft and assemble marketing materials (including non-confidential technical descriptions), and provide technology analysis reports to the Licensing Officers responsible for licensing the invention. Incumbent will manage and mentor a group of RTG Fellows who will help with technology analysis and marketing efforts. Incumbent will be responsible for training, managing work flow, interviewing and selecting interns, along with professional development and overall management of the fellowship program. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Licensing, the incumbent manages a portfolio of University intellectual property, making recommendations regarding the evaluation, protection and commercialization of such inventions. The incumbent uses internal and external databases and information resources and consults with University researchers, industry representatives and patent counsel, as appropriate. The incumbent will participate in negotiation of agreements with industry along with Licensing Officers and will work with faculty to evaluate and manage inventions. The successful candidate will have an advanced degree in life sciences or physical sciences (PhD preferred) or applicable work experience, and 3+ years of work experience in the areas of early stage technology evaluation and analysis of intellectual property. Knowledge of current developments and trends in relevant business sectors is desirable.
License Agreements:
Negotiates company financial terms, including appropriate upfront fees, royalty rates, maintenance fees, milestone payments and minimum royalties. Constructs due diligence/developmental timeline for the commercialization of the technology to which licensee must adhere. Keeps supervisor updated on negotiations and reviews terms with supervisor prior to presenting to company. Keeps assigned portfolio current. Regularly inactivates cases in his/her portfolio that no longer have commercial potential or have no remaining patent rights. Keeps in close contact with inventors in order to track new developments in the technology and upcoming publications/presentations that may change the patent or commercial outlook for the technology.
Compensation Range:
$74,000.00 - $143,000.00

Required:
Experience within the research/technology sectors active and of priority to the university, including those related to medicine, engineering, and physical and life sciences. Advanced degree in the sciences, or equivalent amount of education and experience; terminal degree in sciences, business, or law preferred. Ability to understand and interpret inventions for patentability, marketability, and overall applicability to respective industry s current and predicted future interests. Exceptional writing and editing skills with demonstrated success writing clear, engaging, accurate and well-structured marketing materials for relevant audiences in business and/or science. Ability to work well with people, and use skill and sensitivity in internal and external relations. Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage office priorities and the ability to multitask and adjust quickly to new assignments and priorities. Ability to work independently, as well as part of the RTG and marketing/communications teams.
Preferred:
