Position Summary:
University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) provides care for laboratory animals in support of UC Irvine’s research and teaching missions, in compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the use of vertebrate animals for research and teaching, and to maintain accreditation by AAALAC International.
Uses professional purchasing skills and concepts to complete purchasing assignments of moderate complexity requiring the analysis and review of multiple procurement options. Has authority to make purchases within a moderate and pre-approved dollar limit, including purchasing all vertebrate laboratory animals on behalf of UCI researchers. Exercises judgment within defined limits and practices to determine most effective methodology to acquire common goods and services, including laboratory animals, vivarium items, and office supplies. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Coordinates animal acquisitions with researchers and vivarium staff to support the University’s research and teaching missions. Monitors departmental purchases for cost tracking purposes, including maintaining multiple spreadsheets as part of annual cost analysis. Assists with general administrative duties in the Department including processing reimbursements, issuing card keys, and other tasks as needed. The position requires diplomacy, tact, and a strong willingness to assist investigators in the selection and ordering of animals. Strong communication skills are necessary to coordinate animal shipments with veterinary and husbandry staff regarding space availability and health requirements for incoming animals.

$25.57 - $35.30 (Hourly Rate) Expected Pay Range within the Full Salary Range $25.57 - $45.02 (Hourly Rate)
Required:
• Minimum 1-3 years of experience with procurement in academic setting required. • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in laboratory animal procurement preferred. • Minimum 1-3 years of experience working with live laboratory animals preferred.
• Bachelor's degree and / or equivalent experience / training.
Analytical skills necessary to evaluate the quality and cost effectiveness of purchasing options. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally. Ability to read and interpret terms and conditions of basic contracts. Working level of proficiency in the use of standard spreadsheet and word processing software. Ability to organize and process detailed work with changing priorities, frequent interruptions and minimal supervision.
Preferred:
Some knowledge of the organization's departments and animal care operations required in order to meet procurement needs. Knowledge of and familiarity with campus Kuali Financial System (KFS) and campus procurement policies. Knowledge of and experience with commonly used laboratory animal species, strains and vendors. Knowledge of and familiarity with departmental software system used for placing animal orders. Knowledge of Animal Welfare Regulations including regulations pertaining to animal housing, importation and transportation.
