The University of California Irvine offers an invigorating working and training environment in the Synthetic Biology and Anti-Cancer Laboratory of Dr. Barbara Jusiak. We’re looking for an enthusiastic new team member to join us in using the emerging field of Synthetic Biology to engineer macrophages to target cancer for destruction by the immune system. We use a combination of model systems in parallel: 1) cultured mammalian cells, 2) in vivo mouse experiments, and 3) fruit flies (Drosophila), which can be genetically manipulated to develop cancer, and which have a simple immune system with macrophage-like cells. You will work under the mentorship of a PhD Synthetic Biologist. Overall, we seek a self-motivated, conscientious, well-organized candidate with good written and verbal communication skills and a willingness to learn new techniques.

$19.02 - $22.05 (Hourly Rate)
Required:
Proficiency with MS Office software suite; Willingness to work with both mice (including sacrificing them for as part of the experiment) and fruit flies (Drosophila); Ability to learn new techniques, protocols, and complex tasks with general instruction Ability to work independently and efficiently in an organized and detail-oriented manner Ability to do some work in the evening and on weekends Commitment to stay for at least two years.
Preferred:
• Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. OR • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related field or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Mathematics with strong coursework and/or research experience in biology
Experience with mammalian tissue culture; Experience with working with mice; Experience with fluorescent microscopy; Experience with flow cytometry; Experience with molecular biology (PCR, Gibson assembly, plasmid preps, etc.); An intrinsic scientific curiosity and enthusiasm for developing new skills and Expertise.
Special Conditions Required:
Available to work weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.
