Position Summary:
 
The Department of Medicine has 11 divisions, more than 300 employees and more than $68 million in expenditures annually. The Data Analyst will be responsible for working with field staff both internationally and domestically, managing data collection and performing data analyses for one or more research projects (current major projects are described below). Responsibilities will include developing data collection instruments, collecting and organizing quantitative and qualitative data, training project staff to collect quantitative and qualitative data, developing and maintaining data quality control and assurance procedures, and data management in Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap), Stata and R. The analyst will work with biostatisticians to execute data analyses. Current Major Projects 1. Supporting, Mobilizing and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) Technical Area 1 (Diagnostics) consortium studies – SMART4TB is a USIAD-funded multi-institution and multi-country initiative to accelerate development of new diagnostics, therapeutics and containment strategies, with partners across 24 countries organized into 6 regional hubs. 2. Rapid Research in Diagnostics Development for TB Network (R2D2 TB Network) – This NIH U01-funded project will establish a platform for identifying promising early-stage diagnostics from a broad range of product developers and conducting field evaluations in TB endemic countries to advance their development and evaluate their accuracy, usability/acceptability and costs/cost-effectiveness. The project includes field sites in up to 10 countries (Uganda, South Africa, the Gambia, Zambia, Vietnam, India, Philippines, Peru, Brazil and Georgia). Skills of interest include international field site management, data management and human factors research. As desired, the project provides opportunities to be involved in Bayesian analytic methods and health economic studies.

Required:
 
  • Relevant training in biostatistics or equivalent experience. 
  • Experience in Stata and/or R Common problems solved by the employee: 
  • A new intervention is being implemented. The employee will update the study database and data quality assurance procedures to ensure accurate data capture. 
  • Project stakeholders need regular information on study progress. 
  • The employee will design and develop data reporting tools and reports using programs such as Stata or R. 
  • The employee will serve as the primary author of analysis code used in reporting, and incorporate any edits as needed to maintain up-to-date reporting. Less frequent and more complex problems solved by the employee: A new research study project begins and requires a database for data collection. The employee consults with the principal investigator and assists with the design and development of the data collection tools. 
  • Many data queries are generated for a particular data collection field. 
  • The employee consults with the principal investigator to problem solve and revise the data collection tool and/or re-train study staff on data collection and entry Problems/situations that are referred to this employee's supervisor: 
  • A question comes up about re-defining a key analytic variable. Employee reports to the PI for review. 
  • The employee observes that one study site has consistently poor-quality data that is limiting timely analysis. 
  • Employee reports to the PI for problem solving.
  • Bachelor's degree in epidemiology, public health, or related area and 3 years of directly relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Human Subjects research training or ability to obtain in the first year of employment
  • Thorough knowledge of research function. 
  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming. 
  • Thorough skills in analysis and consultation. Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing. 
  • Knowledge of several statistical programs including STATA, R and MS Excel, as well as the data management program REDCap, is required to ensure the accuracy of study data, produce relevant datasets for analysis, conduct data analysis, and prepare data for publication/presentation. 
  • Experience working on international collaborations including international field experience. 
  • Experience working in global health research including in sub-Saharan Africa or Asia
     
Preferred:
 
  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or related area or equivalent experience/training (preferred)
  • Skills in project management. Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations. 
  • Knowledge of medical terminology with a focus on tuberculosis and/or HIV diagnosis and treatment is needed to work with the many study collaborators. 
  • Proficiency and experience with analyzing hierarchical data. 
  • Proficiency and experience with qualitative data
