Position Summary:
 
Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 280 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 280 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft. Currently, Student Housing houses 45% of UCI’s enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI’s 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

 

The Associate Director of Residential Living supervises Student Life & Development Specialists and support staff, and administers the residential living experience component of the Undergraduate Student Housing program. Responsible for providing vision and leadership in the daily operation of all residential life programs such as community engagement through the programming model, residential life policy formulation and implementation, counseling/advisement systems, educational and social programming, marketing, and student staff selection, training and evaluation. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommends concerning improvements of program to manager. Provides support to residents in crisis. Responds to questions, suggestions, and complaints. Conducts welfare checks as necessary. Responds to after-hour situations as necessary. Under the general direction of the Director of Residential Living, the Associate Director of Residential Living shares responsibility for residential living operations and participates in departmental planning, which includes developing shared priorities and advancing goals in support of student enrollment/retention, development, and inclusive excellence.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $66,700.00 - $79,650.00 (Annual Salary). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $66,700.00 - $118,500.00 (Annual Salary).

Required:
 
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in residence life, programming, policy review, student conduct and student services.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Strong knowledge of University and departmental policies, processes, and procedures. 
  • Proven skill in interpreting, enforcing, and explaining University policies and regulations. 
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs. 
  • Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. 
  • Demonstrated managerial skill in planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling a residential living experience. 
  • Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence and uses these skills to develop original ideas to solve problems. 
  • Ability to compose reports, letters, instructions, and other documents with attention to clarity, tone, composition, and mechanics. 
  • Strong skills in project and program management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, tact, diplomacy and professionalism. 
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad variety of individuals in person, on the phone, and in writing. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Housing specialization. 
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. 
  • Advanced knowledge of risk assessment principles along with the ability to evaluate risks and the likelihood of consequences. 
  • Demonstrated problem solving, decision making, and implementation skills. 
  • Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and lead. 
  • Ability to create, improve, and monitor work standards, procedures and systems that ensure effective service delivery. 
  • Experience and skill in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student and professional staff. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituencies including administrators, staff, students, and vendors. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in group/team settings. 
  • Ability to work independently and to follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. 
  • Skill in taking initiative, setting priorities, and managing time to complete work in a timely manner. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. 
  • Ability to respond with flexibility and efficiency to frequent changes in task focus, competing priorities, and multiple deadlines. 
  • Skill and experience in budget management, basic accounting methods, and developing budget projections.

 

Preferred:
 
  • Master's degree preferred.

 
Special Conditions Required:
 
  • Must pass background check and DMV clearance required. 
  • Must be willing to assist in the event of an emergency/ natural disaster. 
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime, nights and weekends. 
  • This person serves as a manager on-call to provide support and assistant after-hours.
