Position Summary:
The Disability Services Center strives to create a culture of inclusion and access to all UCI programs, services, activities, events, and facilities for students with disabilities by forming partnerships with the university community. DSC also provides reasonable accommodations, and related disability services to UCI students, Continuing Education, Summer Session students, and other program participants. DSC also monitors campus compliance with requirements under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended (ADAAA). The DSC also supports and advise academic and administrative departments regarding accessibility to physical and online environments.
Under supervision, the Alt Media Specialist possesses a specialized skill set to work with students with a variety of disabilities (including those with print disabilities) to evaluate compatibility with their accessibility needs, consistent with baseline legal accommodation recommendations made by their counselors; conduct individualized training in the use of and support for various assistive technologies for students, faculty and staff; and develop combined approaches and best practices that will convey information in the most inclusive and timely manner. Exercising independent judgement, the individual analyzes the students’ accessibility needs and determines the precise course of action, oversees the conversion process and translates informational and instructional materials into the appropriate alternate formats (e.g., Braille, electronic text or e-text, large print, audio and accessible PDF, etc.) in conformance with legal guidelines including Sections 503, 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as Reauthorized (ADAAA). Facilitates regular communication with students, faculty and staff regarding informational and instructional materials; maintains detailed and organized records of conversion requests and contacts to ensure that the Disability Services Center is meeting the accessibility needs of the student as well as the University’s legal obligations. The professional establishes goals, objectives and priorities; ensures assistive technologies and software environments are available and properly maintained; and participates in planning, developing, and implementing programs, processes, and activities for students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state law to secure their equitable access to the academic and campus environment. Provides supervision of student workers, such as e-text editors and administrative assistants.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $27.34 - $27.94 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $27.34 - $39.18 (Hourly Rate).

Required:
- 1-3 years experience working with students with disabilities and assistive technologies or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Bachelor's Degree
- Knowledge and application of federal, state and local disability-related laws and best practices.
- Ability to use personal computers (both PC and Macintosh), assistive/information technologies, word processing, editing, spreadsheet and database application.
- Ability to recognize and maintain highly confidential student information.
- Ability to analyze data and assess needs in order to translate the information into an action plan to prioritize workflow.
- Skill to communicate clearly, accurately and appropriately with a broad variety of people in person, on the phone or other telecommunication platforms, through oral, written correspondence and email.
- Competence to interact and communicate effectively and diplomatically with students, staff, faculty and administrators.
- Skill to comprehend the substance of written communications and to respond accordingly. Meet tight deadlines with thoroughness and efficiency.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of and ability to learn and support various technologies and specialized equipment, tools and software used by individuals with disabilities, including those with print disabilities such as students who are blind or have low vision.
- Knowledge and use of specialized equipment, software, and techniques for document digitization and the production of Braille, which includes high speed scanning equipment, document imaging software and Braille translation software.
- Knowledge of Braille production including current and updated rules from the Braille Authority of North America (BANA); trends, and tools to assist students who depend on Braille.
- Skill to compose and prepare narrative, graphs, and tables quickly, accurately and grammatically using various software programs.
- Skill in the supervision of students, assignment of work projects and evaluation of work performance.
