Position Summary:
 
Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will perform preclinical animal studies which include direct mouse and rat handling (housing, breeding, monitoring, weighing, measuring temperature, measuring tumor size using a caliper, among others). Proven expertise in breeding, weaning, and genotyping mice colonies, and in performing blood collection (from tail-vein and retro-orbital), as well as i.p., s.c., and i.v. (tail-vein and retroorbital) injections, and/or experience in tumor inoculation, rodent behavior studies, rodent dissection, and brain tissue analysis is a plus. Function independently within established guidelines and complying with established laboratory protocols. Required research skills include: primary culture of human brain tumor specimens; maintaining, counting and passaging, freezing and thawing primary and secondary brain tumor cultures; maintaining incubators, cell culture hoods, and liquid nitrogen cell storage units; proficiency with real-time PCR technology (primer design and making gene specific standards for absolute quantification of mRNA and DNA levels in cell cultures and tumors); molecular analysis (processing DNA, RNA/cDNA, and protein of brain tumor specimens including gelatin zymography, immunoblotting, and electrophoresis); Matrigel cell invasion assays; small animal anesthesia; small animal surgery including subcutaneous xenografting and stereotactic brain implantation xenografting; animal sacrifice; animal brain fixation and histological sectioning; immunohistochemistry cell culture and tissue section staining. The incumbent should be familiar with IACUC protocols and animal welfare regulations. Molecular and cell biology skills and/or inventory management are a plus. functioning independently within established guidelines and complying with established laboratory protocols. Proven ability to work in a fast-paced team environment is necessary.
 
Compensation Range:
 
Hourly: $20.64 - $24.7

Preferred:
 
Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical, or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or related fields.
Previous work with mice/mouse husbandry.
They should ideally have prior experience working with human brain tumor specimens.
Should have prior experience in ordering supplies and equipment, maintenance of laboratory equipment, handling and monitoring small animals, keeping organized and complete experimental data and administrative records, and complying with UCI laboratory safety and regulatory policies and procedures.
Should have experience, and be comfortable with, functioning independently within established guidelines and complying with established laboratory protocols.
