The Chemical Hygiene Officer will serve as the technical expert in one of the following fields/disciplines: Laboratory Safety including Chemical Safety, Radiation Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Ergonomics, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Waste, or Environmental Protection. Problems are complex and may require creation of new methodologies by applying professional EH&S knowledge and/or expertise. Serves as technical expert in the development/implementation of programs within one of these fields/disciplines. May represent EH&S regarding the field/discipline at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system wide, local government, state, and federal levels of authority in matters related to field of expertise. Decision-making is based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policy; professional best practices; relevant science methodology, impact on other EH&S programs; and senior management approvals. Decisions may impact other EH&S programs, departments, segments of the organization and/or organization wide. Has general responsibility for the campus chemical hygiene plan, close coordination with academic EH&S coordinators, provide subject matter expertise in the areas of chemical safety, risk evaluation, high hazard chemical research facilities. Incumbent will also identify, evaluate, and control chemical workplace hazards and develop chemical safety training programs for all levels of faculty, research staff, teaching assistants and laboratory personnel. Incumbent will also respond to campus emergencies involving potentially hazardous materials. Knowledge and experience applying laboratory safety and industrial hygiene principles and standards to university environment is required. Knowledge of Cal-OSHA Laboratory Standard is required.

Required:
 
B.S. in Chemistry or Occupational Safety in research or related field and/or equivalent experience/training with a minimum 7 year safety experience in a research/industry setting or MS in Chemistry with a minimum of 4 years of experience in a research/industry setting
Proven skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction
Advanced or expert knowledge/understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields
Strong chemistry background with recent experience in research safety
Professional level of knowledge with broad-based laboratory experience in a research environment
Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy
Demonstrated experience in developing a comprehensive environmental health and safety programs
Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment
Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and database programs
Skill in training development, instruction, and good public speaking skills
Skill in setting priorities in order to complete work in a timely manner
Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups
 
Preferred:
 
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and/or Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer.
Ph.D. Chemist preferred extensive experience in a research setting.
Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff.
 
Special Conditions Required:
 
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and participate in the DMV Pull-notice program Must be willing to work outside of regularly scheduled shift Participating member of EH&S emergency support team Must be able to wear PPE Must comply with UC and UCI vaccination policy.
