Position Summary:
 
The UC Irvine Student Health Center is a comprehensive outpatient clinic staffed with licensed primary care physicians, psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, dentists, physician assistants, registered nurse practitioners, and registered nurses. Medical specialists from various disciplines including dermatology, orthopedics/sports medicine, gynecology, internal medicine, and ENT provide on-site consultation on a regular basis. The Student Health Dental Clinic provides high quality dental care to the campus community in a professional, friendly, and caring environment. Our services include dental hygiene, general and cosmetic dentistry procedures, tooth removal, as well as some specialty care. Staff members are dedicated to treating each patient with integrity, compassion and respect.
 
The Lead Dentist serves as a role model and supervises the clinical operations, demonstrating competency in all phases of general dentistry, commitment to excellence in delivery of services and providing guidance to clinical staff on patient care related issues. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Assists with administration and management of personnel and material resources. Provides priority setting and work flow analysis. Performs oral examinations; performs dental extractions or operations; performs a full range of dental procedures allowed by the incumbent's licensure; prepares and keeps clinical records; performs dental prophylaxis and non-surgical periodontal services. Oversees infection control protocols. Responsible to ensure medication and pharmaceutical management is in line with SHC and university standards. Provides direct supervision of Dentists, Hygienists and Dental Assistants by monitoring the quality of delivery in the Student Health Dental Clinic. Provides direction to employees according to established policies, collective bargaining agreements and management guidance. Reports to the Dental Practice Manager regarding dental quality of care and administrative matters as they relate to the overall functioning of the Dental Clinic at the Student Health Center. Daily work is coordinated with the Executive Director and Dental Practice Manager, who supervise the schedules and monitors the condition of operatory rooms and X-rays units. Participates in staff meetings. Maintains professional relationships with dental specialists in the local community.

Required:
 
Minimum seven (7) years of experience after obtaining license to practice dentistry. Minimum three (3) years of experience in a leadership or supervisory role to dental practitioners in assessing patient needs, establishing priority of actions, and providing full range of dental care and services.
Completion of a four-year dental program. Doctoral degree in dental surgery or dental medicine.
Current license to practice dentistry issued by the Dental Board of California. Current DEA registration, schedules II-V.
Current Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS/CPR and AED) card in accordance with the American Heart Association standards.
Competency in all phases of general dentistry and commitment to high quality patient care. Broad, solid clinical knowledge in overseeing a dental care operation. Solid knowledge of leadership and supervision of dental practitioners in assessing patient needs, establishing priority of actions, and providing full range of dental care and services. Must be able to diagnose patient condition and make associated treatment recommendations. Solid knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of advanced dentist duties. Strong skills in effectively making work assignments and continuous adjustments as patient needs are determined. Must be able to communicate with both patients and clinical staff members. Must be able to work in a collaborative manner. Must be able to influence others. Knowledge of electronic dental records systems. Must be computer literate.
Excellent customer service and patient education regarding oral health. Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Knowledge of Dentrix software.

Special Conditions Required:
 
This position's schedule is M-F and during traditional work hours, however, weekends or non-traditional work hours may be required for special projects or busy times of the year, or when strict deadlines must be met. In the case of extended hours, this position may be required to work those hours. Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and continued monitoring of licensure as it applies to the position, and successful completion of our background review or credentialing process, as appropriate to the position. Per the UC Ethics Briefing, the employee is responsible for reporting any and all potential conflicts of interest to their supervisor in a timely manner.
 
The employee must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations and requirements regarding vaccination and testing of healthcare employees. This includes, but may not be limited to; current hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening. The employee must comply with CDPH and UC COVID-19 Vaccine Policy, by providing proof of Full Vaccination or submitting a request for Exception.
