Position Summary:
 
Under the direction of the Program Director for the Transfer Student Center, the Counselor/Coordinator for Transfer StudentCenter works independently to provide high-quality programs, services, and initiatives that enhance transfer student engagement and retention at UCI; provides high-quality programming, advising, and support to current and prospective transfer students related to transition, academic and personal success; interprets related University policies and procedures; communicates with campus and community officials about transfer students and transfer student center efforts and initiatives. The Counselor/Coordinator develops, implements, and evaluates transfer student initiatives including outreach, counseling, and referral efforts to assist students experiencing academic and/or adjustment issues, programs and services that positively impact transfer student engagement, and initiates and develops cooperative relationships with campus colleagues to enhance the transfer student experience. The Counselor/Coordinator provides leadership, coordination, and counseling services for UCI’s Umoja pilot program. Assists with various administrative duties, as assigned.
 
Provides the full range of assessment, counseling, and advice to targeted students, and makes referrals to organization and community resources. Works independently, receiving guidance on complicated problems/situations.
 
Compensation Range:
 
$53,500.00 - $78,600.00

Required:
 
Minimum of 5 years of experience in student advising; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
Familiarity with the unique issues of transfer students, which are often, adult, re-entry, parents, and/or first-generation, in a college setting.
Direct experience in developing and executing innovative workshops, seminars and presentations.
 
Preferred:
 
Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports.
Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
