Position Summary:
Under the close supervision of postdocs and graduate students to assist with the culture and maintenance of human pluripotent stem cells and derived cell products. The position will also entail preparation and performance of genetic characterization of cell lines using standard molecular techniques (RNA, DNA, and protein). Additional responsibilities include keeping updated and accurate data of ongoing experiments and cell line details and requires proficient computer skills. The work includes human and animal specimens. Cell culture maintenance: Perform daily maintenance of antibiotic-free human stem cell cultures with responsibilities including cell feeding, growth monitoring, and cell passaging, etc. Additionally, routine checks for contamination (bacterial, fungal, etc.) will be performed. Perform characterization of stem cell lines and derived cell types using standard molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and genomic sequencing, Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, etc. Responsible for maintaining thorough and precise records associated with the generation, characterization, storage, and distribution of cell lines and derived products. Responsible for keeping precise records of multiple cell lines, biological samples, and experimental details.

Aseptic cell culture technique - Applicant must demonstrate prior expertise in sterile cell culture technique using mammalian cells in addition to a familiarity with methods of identifying and testing for cell culture contamination. Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Effective verbal and written communication skills in English. Functions well in a team environment. Availability to work occasional nights and weekends. Demonstrates ability to analyze problems/situations and formulate solutions. Ability to exercise good judgment in handling information to accurately record information, protocols, formulas and data. Experience with general lab equipment: pipets, scales, pH meters, centrifuges, power supplies, etc. Excellent interpersonal skills to relate easily and effectively with people within and outside the University, including both strong written and verbal communications. Demonstrated experience in participating in discussion related to research projects. Strong ability to multi-task, prioritize and follow up. Skill to use an iPhone, iPad, personal computer, computer software programs at the level of sophistication required for general office work. Experience with PCs and/or Macs. Knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Proficient writing skills to prepare/compose/review a variety of materials with accuracy and completeness. Experience in assisting, testing and standardizing techniques.
Preferred:
Minimum of bachelor’s degree in scientific field. Previous experience in University research setting. Experience in cell culture. Experience working with human stem cells. Experience working with brain/spinal cord injured animals. Experience in behavioral testing of animals. Advanced computer skills (stereology-MBF SI software). Experience in use of routine statistical, data plotting programs. Strong understanding of antibiotic-free culture procedures or relevant experience. Experience with performing molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA/RNA preparation/extractions, and gel electrophoresis to genetically characterize cell lines. Experience with methods of protein characterization, including Western blotting and immunocytochemistry.
Special Conditions Required:
Weekend hours may be required on a rotation schedule, and occasional evening hours may be required, as needed to perform timed experiments (possibly including cell culture, animal care/behavior, or other necessary items). May be required to work overtime on occasion as requested by supervisor.
